Eight of the Best Boutique Wineries in McLaren Vale

1. Bekkers, Seaview

Toby and Emmanuelle Bekkers make just three wines, all Grenache and Syrah, with a restraint that reads closer to the Rhône than the McLaren Vale of old. The 2025 Halliday Wine Companion scored their wines 99 and 96 points. The cellar door at Seaview is open seven days, 10am to 4pm, with a $30 tasting that is refunded against a six-bottle buy. No food, just focus. Book ahead if there are more than eight of you.

2. SC Pannell, McLaren Vale

Stephen Pannell helped lead McLaren Vale's Grenache revival, and he has won the region's Bushing Trophy for best red four times, more than any other maker. The cellar door on Olivers Road pours a wide range, from Grenache and Touriga to Fiano and Nero d'Avola, and serves small plates and grazing food with vineyard views. Open Friday to Monday, 11am to 5pm. A good one to build a long lunch around.

3. Samuel's Gorge, McLaren Vale

Justin McNamee makes Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre and Tempranillo out of an 1853 stone barn on a ridge above the Onkaparinga gorge. It is one of the oldest farm buildings in the region, and one of the best views. Walk-ins are welcome, up to six at a time, open daily 11am to 5pm with a $10 tasting that is refunded when you buy a bottle. No food, but the setting earns the trip on its own.

4. Bondar, Blewitt Springs

Andre Bondar and Selina Kelly farm the Rayner Vineyard, with Shiraz planted in 1947 and 1950, and make a lighter, fresher style than the district is known for. Halliday named them Best Value Winery in Australia for 2025. The cellar door is shared with Lino Ramble and Sherrah, which is a friendly way to taste three small makers in one stop. Open Friday to Sunday 11am to 5pm, with shorter hours midweek. A $15 tasting, credited when you buy.

5. Hither & Yon, Willunga

Brothers Richard and Malcolm Leask work mostly with Italian and Iberian grapes (Nero d'Avola, Vermentino, Aglianico and more) across a portfolio of around 25 wines. They were South Australia's first carbon-neutral wine brand. The cellar door sits in Willunga's 1860s butcher shop, slate floors and a fireplace, and seats only 14, so it stays intimate. Open Thursday to Monday, 11am to 4pm. There is a café next door when you want lunch.

6. Aphelion, McLaren Vale

Rob and Louise Mack started Aphelion in 2014 with a single tonne of Blewitt Springs Grenache, and Grenache is still the point. The wines are vegan and low in added sulphur. The cellar door is open seven days, 11am to 5pm, with a standard tasting indoors and a Back of the Ute tasting out among the old bush vines. Drop in midweek and there is cheese on the house.

7. Inkwell, Tatachilla

Irina Santiago-Brown and Dudley Brown farm on the cooler western edge, and in 2023 Inkwell became Australia's first Regenerative Organic Certified vineyard. The cellar door is built from twenty repurposed shipping containers with a rooftop deck, which makes it one of the more striking places to taste in the Vale. Shiraz is the backbone, with Primitivo and a couple of Portuguese whites alongside. Open Tuesday to Sunday, midday to 5pm. Book ahead.

8. Grounded Cru, McLaren Flat

Joffa Thompson and Jacko Jackman both grew up in McLaren Vale wine country and went out on their own in 2013. They reached Halliday five-star status by 2022. The cellar door on Ingoldby Road pours their Shiraz and Grenache among old vines, with grazing boards on the lawn and a guided vineyard tasting if you want to go deeper. Open Thursday to Monday, 11am to 4:30pm.
