Our Story

We are family owned, operated, and focussed. Sew & Sew is founded on the idea that making beautiful wine is a hand-craft, much like sewing. We treat each bottle as a stitch in a longer thread: the work of a place, a season, and the people who farm it.

Since 2014 we’ve fashioned our wines from the best fruit we can find in McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills, including our own boutique vineyard, Alagna, which looks over the Vale from Pennys Hill Road at The Range. The cellar door below it is a converted dairy: original rustic bones, a modern addition, and the fire going all winter. We open it seven days a week.

Three ranges, one continuous craft

Sashiko takes its name from the Japanese stitch-craft, literally “little pierce”, once used to reinforce farming clothes. A time-honoured hand craft, like winemaking. These are our everyday wines: light, fresh, tasty, and priced so a Tuesday can carry one.

Contour wines each come from a single vineyard, and their labels trace that vineyard’s contour lines. Small batches, made when a block earns it: a true reflection of varietal, site and vintage.

ICON is the estate at its best: named blocks at Alagna, hand selection, long months in French and American oak, and case counts small enough to print on the label. Made only in exceptional years.

The work itself

The craft is the same across every tier; only the moment differs. Fruit is picked in the cool of the night or early morning, often a block at a time. Reds ferment in two-tonne open fermenters, hand plunged morning and night, then go to the basket press and into French oak: new where the wine can carry it, seasoned where it can’t. Our best wines are racked, never fined or filtered, and bottled in runs we count in cases, not pallets.
